Kelvin Kiptum Cheruiyot was born on December 2, 1999 in Elgeyo Marakwet. He was raised in Chepsamo village with a high altitude of 2,600 m. He used to herd his father’s cattle where his passion grew by following other athletes training along the forest trails.

Career

After running barefoot for quite sometimes he started to train harder around 2013 at 13 years old. He ran his first marathon in 2013 where he finished in the tenth position. He never lost hope and participated in another race in 2014 only to finish in the 12th position.

Kelvin Kiptum understood that nothing comes easy as he continued to self-coached himself. In 2018, he saw a light at the end of the tunnel. He finished first with a record time of 62:01.

Fast forward to March 2019; Kiptum participated in the Lisbon half marathon, his first international appearance. He finished in the fifth position but improved with a personal best time of 5954.

In November 2019, he won the Kass half marathon held in Kenya. Kiptum started working with his Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizimana in 2020. In 2022, during the Valencia marathon, he became the third best man to break the 2 hr. 2 minutes marathon.

In April 2023, Kiptum became the second man to run the fastest time at 2:01:25. On October 2023, Kiptum shattered the world record and became the world record holder with a personal best time of 2:00:35.

Accident and Death

On Sunday 11th February 2024, it was a normal day for Kelvin Kiptum. After running his normal errands with his coach, he decided to head home at around 11 pm. Around the area of Kaptagat, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Kiptum lost control of his car, veered off the road, and collided with a tree on the ditch.

Inside the car, Kiptum was with his coach Gervais Hakizimana From Rwanda, and another female in the rear passenger seat. Kiptum and his coach died on the spot while the other passenger sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Subsequently, four men had visited Kiptum before he met his demise, They were arrested as prime suspects and later released as they had visited him to strike a contract about running shoes for his marathons.

After his demise, tributes poured from Sebastian Coe, The world athletics president, Kenyan President William Ruto, and marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge among many other people.

President Ruto ordered a house to be built for the family of Kelvin Kiptum as a sign of appreciation. On the other hand Golazo, the Rotterdam marathon organizer donated 50,000 euros to Kelvin Kiptum`s foundation.

Kelvin Kiptum was laid to rest in a state funeral on Friday 23 February 2024 at his Naiberi farm around Eldoret. The funeral was attended by President William Ruto, Sebastian Coe, and Golazo among many athletes
