Eligibility Criteria for Kenya Prisons Recruitment
The Kenya Prisons Service wishes to announce to the general public vacancies for General Cadet, Medical Cadet Officers, and Medical Technicians. Prospective candidates wishing to apply MUST satisfy the general conditions and requirements given below;
- Must be a Kenyan citizen
- Have a valid National Identification Card
- Have no criminal record:
- Be between the ages of 18-30 years for diploma/certificate holders OR Be between the ages of 18 and 30 years for degree holders
- Be between the ages of 18 and 32 years for medical consultants
- Be at least 5 feet, inches tall for men and 5 feet 2 inches tall for women
- Be physically and medically fit
- Must have good hearing and dear vision
- Female candidates MUST not be pregnant at the time of recruitment and during the entire training period.
ACADEMIC & TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Medical practitioners:
Candidates must possess:
- A minimum mean grade of C+ at KCSE
- An undergraduate/post-graduate degree from a recognized institution of higher learning and Registered with the relevant statutory bodies
b)General Cadets:
Candidates must possess

The exercise will take place on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 beginning at 8:00 a.m. in different venues across the country. Over 340 centers have been earmarked for the exercise.
Training Period
On recruitment, candidates will undergo an intensive Government-sponsored paramilitary initial training course lasting not less than nine (9) months for technicians and thirteen (13) months for general cadet officers.
What is KPS?
The Kenya Prisons Service came into being in December 1954 under the Kenya Prisons Act (Cap 276). The aim was to provide for the orderly management and control of prisons in Kenya. The services provided by prisons are now overseen by the Kenya Prisons Services (KPS). Mr. Robert Seago, the director-general of KPS, has been in charge of this agency for the last two years.
The Kenya Prisons Act has been significantly revised over the years, and as part of the reforms, several changes were made to the staff structure in various departments including recruitment. The majority of officers are recruited at the headquarters through the civil service examinations with KPS undertaking recruitment twice a year. The previous pattern of recruitment was based on the 1968 Gazette circular.
