How to Apply for New Generation Digital Number Plates Kenya in 2024

The Digital number plates Kenya were introduced to curb crime and vehicle theft. Since its introduction in 2022, most people haven’t applied because they deem the process to be complex.

The new generation plates come with high-security features such as a serial number, a Kenyan flag, and a scannable hologram. All the information about the vehicle can be accessed by a simple scan and trace back to the owner of the vehicle.

The application process is quite simple and will only take a few minutes. If you’re unable to apply for yourself visit the nearest cyber café and you will be assisted.

Application Process

A few months ago, the process was done via the NTSA portal. Everything was moved to the eCitizen portal for easy access.

Before you begin the application process, you will need the following:

  • National ID/Passport or Alien card
  • Passport photo with a white background
  • A stable internet connection
  • Computer, laptop, or smartphone
  • eCitizen log-in credentials
  • Original logbook
  • Money (Ksh 3,050 for cars and Ksh 1,550 for motorcycles)
  • Photos of the old number plate

Once you have the above, let’s proceed to registration

Register

Registration will only take about five minutes. Please note that sometimes the website might encounter errors when fetching your data. Be patient and try again. If the problem persists, visit the nearest Huduma centre.

Head over to the eCitizen portal

  1. Click on “Register” at the top right side
  2. Select account type which includes Citizen, Resident, Diplomat, and Foreigner.
  3. For Kenyan Citizens, click on “Citizen”
  4. Enter your ID number
  5. Next enter your first name as it appears on the ID (if it doesn’t fetch your details, try your second or last name)
  6. Select your year of birth from the drop-down menu
  7. Click on validate
  8. Your profile will appear with your full name and National ID number
  9. Click next to move to the contact section
  10. Enter your phone number starting with 07 or 01(the number should be working to receive a code)
  11. Enter your working email address.
  12. Click next
  13. You will receive an OTP from either your phone number or email address
  14. Enter the OTP and click next
  15. Create your password (minimum 8 characters with a mix of upper and lower case, special characters, and numbers)
  16. Repeat the password to confirm
  17. Click next
  18. The next step is uploading a passport photo
  19. Ensure you read the photo requirements
  20. Upload your photo in jpeg
  21. Accept the terms and conditions
  22. Click complete

Your account is ready; let’s now move to log in

Log in

Head over to the eCitizen log-in page

  • Enter your email address and password
  • Click on sign-in
  • You will receive an OTP
  • Enter the OTP and click next
  • Your eCitizen portal will open
  • Click on the first link (NTSA NEW)
  • You will be prompted to continue on another page
  • Click Continue

Your NTSA dashboard will appear with your details and the list of vehicles or motorcycles you own

Please note that you can’t apply for digital number plates Kenya if the vehicle is not visible on your dashboard or hasn’t been transferred to your name.

Applying for Digital number Plates Kenya

Once you’re on the NTSA dashboard, locate the list of your vehicles on the Home tab

  1. You will see the Model, Vehicle registration, year of registration, color, inspection, and action at the end.
  2. On the Action mini-tab, you will see “view” for the list of vehicles
  3. Once your vehicle details appear, click on motor vehicle services
  4. Click on reflective plates
  5. The vehicle details will appear, cross0check the details to ascertain they’re correct
  6. Click next
  7. Select the reason for the reflective plates from the drop-down menu
  8. Attach the logbook and number plate photos in one PDF file
  9. Select your collection centre and notification method (E-mail or SMS)
  10. Confirm the application details are true on the declaration
  11. Click complete

Move to the next stage which is payment

Charges

Once you have confirmed all the details, move to the final stage which is the payment

A vehicle will cost Ksh 3,050 and a motorcycle will cost Ksh 1,550

  • Choose your payment method, M-Pesa, banks, RTGS, or Pesaflow direct
  • Make your payment
  • Click complete
  • You will see a successful prompt message pop up
  • Download your invoices

Remember to carry your original National ID and number plates when going to collect the new digital number plates Kenya.
