The Nairobi expressway is a 27 km elevated highway that runs from Westlands along the Waiyaki way to Mlolongo, Mombasa road. It was built at the cost of Ksh 88 billion to ease the heavy traffic congestion witnessed along Mombasa road.
Nairobi Expressway – Entry Rates, ETC Service , MTC Card
he Expressway has 15 entrance points and 14 exit points that provide convenience to motorists using the road. It will only take 20 minutes to travel from JKIA to Westlands, which previously used to take two hours.
Moja Expressway Company is mandated to operate the Expressway for 27 years and recover the money used in construction through toll fees. You can use two methods to pay the toll fee: Cash, ETC, and MTC Cards.

The Nairobi Expressway website allows users to access various services fast and conveniently. The services available are:

The charges depend on your vehicle class and the distance covered. Heavy vehicles pay higher than normal lightweight private vehicles.

Nairobi Expressway ETC Service Registration

The Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) uses an On-Board Unit (system) installed on the windshield. Using infrared scanning technology, points are deducted from your account once your vehicle passes through the toll station.
A minimum of Ksh 2,000 plus a service charge of Ksh 1,000 is required for the ETC. To get the ETC service, visit the service centres along Mombasa road and Gatanga road or apply online
For online applications, be ready with these documents:
- Your email address
- Your National identity card
- Your vehicle registration number
- Your vehicle’s logbook
- Your preferred installation centre (Nairobi Expressway Plaza or Lavington service centre)
- Your address
- Once the documents are ready, visit www.nairobiexpressway.ke
- Log in to your account and proceed to ETC installation on the dashboard.

- You will be required to fill in details and upload your ID and vehicle’s Logbook.

- If you have filled in the details correctly, hit submit and visit the selected service centre.
Using the ETC
- Access the Expressway using any entry point.
- Maintain a low speed of 20kph
- Make sure you select the displayed ETC lane on the toll station.
- Once the OBU system captures your vehicle details, the barrier will be lifted, and you can proceed.
How to Apply for Nairobi Expressway MTC Card
When using the Manual Toll Collection (MTC) card, you can access the road using different vehicles. You will top up Ksh 1,000 plus a service charge of Ksh 300
To apply for the MTC card, visit the service centres (Lavington service centre or Nairobi Expressway Plaza) or apply online through their website, which is much easier and more efficient. You will need to scan your National identity card (ID) or passport before you begin.
- Access their website and log in to your account

- On the dashboard, scroll to the MTC cards and click apply.

- You will be directed to the application page, where you will be required to provide:
- Email address
- Scanned ID card
- Collection center
- Your address
- After you provide all the details, hit submit, and that’s all. Next will be visiting the service centre you selected to pick up your card.

Using the MTC
- Access the Expressway using any entry point.
- Maintain a lower speed limit of 5kph
- Make sure you select the displayed ETC lane on the toll station.
- Press the green button at the booth to collect your pass.
- Present your voucher to the attendant at the toll station for verification.
- The barrier will be lifted, and you can exit the Expressway.

Nairobi Expressway Account Top-Up – Online Payment
To top up your account, you can opt to visit the service centres provided, but for convenience, use the online platform. Make sure you have the following before you begin the process:
- A computer
- Stable internet
- Login credentials
- Head to the Nairobi Expressway website and log in. If you don’t have an account, create a new account.

- On the dashboard, click on Top-up Account.

- Select the points you want to top up, enter the amount and pay (a transaction amount of Ksh 5 will be charged). Once the payment is confirmed, you’re ready to hit the elevated road.

NOTE: the following are not allowed to use the Expressway:
- Skaters
- Tuk-Tuks
- Bicycles
- Pedestrians
- Scooters and motorbikes
- Wheelbarrows
- Handcarts and trolleys
